Carmen immigrated to Canada from Colombia in the Spring of 2012. She was the owner operator of a beauty salon in Colombia for 8 years, and while she has a hairdressing certificate from Columbia, Carmen has been unable to find a job in her field since moving to Canada. As a result, Carmen has worked mostly in the service industry in minimum wage jobs. In February of this year, Carmen started in a Cosmetology program at the Aveda Institute. It will take another 6 months to complete and will qualify her to work as a Hair Stylist at most hairdressing outlets and beauty salons. Such a job will more than double her current wages. Carmen has received a student loan, but needs additional funds to complete her tuition payments and cover some of her living expenses while she studies. Carmen has been approved for a training loan of $4,200 to pay the outstanding tuition and living expenses.
Carmen’s credit file indicates that she has a relatively short credit history and a good payment history.
“My dream is to start my own beauty salon here in Victoria”, Carmen says. “This training is the first step towards that dream.”
